My newly published article for the inaugural issue of The Journal of Mythology examines Thetis, the mother of Achilles, tracing her evolution from ancient myth to modern storytelling. In The Iliad, she appears mainly as a sorrowful intermediary, defined by her son’s fate within a male-centered narrative. But contemporary retellings bring her to the forefront as a complex figure shaped by power, trauma, and resistance.

The article highlights how her forced marriage to Peleus—often minimized in traditional accounts—reshapes her story, influencing both her defiance of divine authority and her relationship with Achilles. Through works like The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller and The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker, Thetis emerges as a fully realized character whose story challenges traditional ideas of motherhood, femininity, and agency.
